A Sedation Dentistry Pioneer Serving La Mesa and San Diego

Dr. Jeff Gray was among the very first dentists in the United States to offer sedation dentistry, and has helped thousands of patients who had avoided the dentist for years finally get the care they needed. His calm, unhurried approach puts even the most anxious patients at ease from the moment they walk in. If dental anxiety has been holding you back, Espire Dental in La Mesa was built for you.

What is Sedation Dentistry?

Sedation dentistry is a medically supervised approach that uses prescription medication to keep you deeply relaxed and comfortable throughout a dental appointment. You remain able to respond to your dentist, but you feel no pain and typically remember little or nothing of the visit afterward. Most patients describe the experience as feeling like they slept through the entire appointment, which is why it is often called sleep dentistry.

For patients in La Mesa, El Cajon, and the San Diego area who have avoided dental care for years because of fear, anxiety, or a bad experience in the past, sedation dentistry is often the turning point. It allows your dentist to complete cleanings, fillings, crowns, implants, and even cosmetic procedures while you remain calm and comfortable from start to finish.

At Espire Dental in La Mesa, Dr. Jeff Gray and Dr. Greg Hurtado offer oral conscious sedation and IV sedation. Before your appointment, the doctors prescribe a small tablet called Triazolam, which you take approximately one hour before arriving at the office. This medication has been prescribed more than 10 million times per year by physicians and has an excellent safety record with very few interactions with other medications.

Throughout your appointment, your heart rate, blood pressure, and oxygen levels are monitored continuously so you are cared for at every moment.

What Types of Sedation Dentistry Are Available?

Espire Dental La Mesa offers several levels of dental sedation, and Dr. Gray will recommend the right option based on your level of anxiety, the procedure you need, and your medical history.

Laughing Gas Sedation

Laughing gas, also known as nitrous oxide, is inhaled through a small mask placed over the nose and produces a mild, pleasant sensation of calm and wellbeing. Unlike oral or IV sedation, the effects of laughing gas wear off within a few minutes after the mask is removed, which means most patients can drive themselves home. This option works well for patients with mild anxiety or for shorter procedures.

Oral Conscious Sedation

Oral conscious sedation uses a prescription pill, typically Triazolam, taken about one hour before your appointment. By the time you sit down in the chair, you feel deeply relaxed and drowsy. You can still respond to questions and follow basic instructions, but you are comfortable throughout and most patients have little to no memory of the visit. This is the most commonly used form of sedation at our office and works well for mild to moderate anxiety.

IV Sedation

IV sedation is administered directly into the bloodstream through a small intravenous line, which allows the medication to take effect quickly and gives Dr. Gray or Dr. Hurtado precise control over your level of sedation throughout the procedure. This option is available for patients with more significant anxiety or for longer, more complex procedures. IV sedation produces a deeper state of relaxation than oral sedation, and most patients have no memory of the appointment afterward.

Sedation Available for Any Procedure

One of the most common misconceptions about sedation dentistry is that it is only available for major procedures. At our La Mesa office, sedation can be incorporated into any appointment, including routine cleanings, X-rays, fillings, and cosmetic treatments. If the idea of sitting in the dental chair makes you anxious regardless of what is being done, sedation can help.

Why La Mesa Patients Choose Espire Dental - Jeff Gray, DDS for Sedation Dentistry

Dr. Gray has been offering sedation dentistry since it was first introduced in the United States, and his record of helping fearful patients get the care they need spans four decades. These are the reasons patients from La Mesa, El Cajon, and throughout San Diego come to our office when nothing else has worked.

A Genuine Pioneer in Sedation Dentistry

Dr. Gray was among the very first dentists in the country to offer sedation dentistry, long before it became widely available. He is a member of the Dental Organization for Conscious Sedation (D.O.C.S.) and has helped thousands of patients who had avoided dental care for years get through comfortable, stress-free appointments. He is known for his calm, friendly chairside manner as much as his clinical skill, Many patients say he is the first dentist they have ever genuinely trusted.

One Patient at a Time, Every Appointment

Dr. Gray sees one patient per appointment by choice. That means when you are in the chair, his complete attention is on you, not split across a waiting room or a rotating schedule. There is no feeling of being rushed through. His staff has been with him for more than 10 years, and patients consistently describe the office as feeling more like family than a clinical setting. For someone coming in with dental anxiety, that calm, focused environment makes a real difference.

Clinical Instructor at Kois Center

The Kois Center in Seattle is one of the most rigorous post-graduate dental programs in the country, where dentists go to master advanced techniques in cosmetic, restorative, and full-mouth rehabilitation dentistry. Dr. Gray is not just a graduate — he serves on its Advisory Committee and has been a Clinical Instructor there since 2013, teaching those techniques to other dentists. Dr. Hurtado is a Kois graduate as well. The training bar at this practice is genuinely high, and that experience shows during every appointment.

50+ Years of Combined Experience

Dr. Gray has been practicing dentistry since 1986 and Dr. Hurtado since 1993, giving the practice more than 50 years of combined experience across cosmetic, restorative, surgical, and sedation dentistry. Patients with complex needs or long histories of avoiding care benefit from that breadth of experience during a single visit.

Voted Among the Best Dentists in America

Dr. Gray has been voted among the Best Dentists in America in two separate peer polls. He has been featured on ABC Channel 10 and CBS Channel 8 in San Diego, honored by the San Diego Padres and Major League Baseball, and named in celebrity dentist Dr. Bill Dorfman's Billion Dollar Smile. That national recognition reflects a career built on consistent, exceptional results.

Our practice serves patients throughout La Mesa, including the neighborhoods around Fletcher Hills and Spring Valley to the south. Patients regularly travel from El Cajon to the east and from communities like Santee, Lakeside, and Lemon Grove to see Dr. Gray and Dr. Hurtado. For patients coming in from San Diego proper, we are a short drive east on Interstate 8, and many say the experience was worth every mile. If dental fear has kept you from getting the care you need, our office was built for patients like you.

Who Is a Candidate for Sedation Dentistry, and What Should You Expect?

Sedation dentistry is a safe, well-established option for most adults who experience significant fear or anxiety around dental care. Good candidates include patients who have avoided the dentist for years, those with a strong gag reflex, anyone with a history of traumatic dental experiences, patients who need extensive work done and want to complete it comfortably in fewer visits, and individuals with physical, developmental, or cognitive disabilities for whom a traditional dental visit can feel overwhelming. Dr. Gray will review your medical history during your consultation to confirm sedation is right for you.

Your first step is a no-pressure conversation with Dr. Gray or Dr. Hurtado about your concerns, your dental history, and what treatment you need. From there, they handle everything.

If laughing gas is the right fit, it is administered through a small mask at the start of your appointment and takes effect within minutes.

If oral conscious sedation is right for you, your medication is prescribed in advance and you take it about an hour before arriving, so you already feel relaxed by the time you sit down.

If IV sedation is recommended, it is administered at the office once you are settled in, allowing Dr. Gray or Dr. Hurtado to adjust your level of sedation precisely throughout the procedure.

Throughout your appointment, your vital signs are monitored continuously and Dr. Gray's full attention is on you alone. Most patients feel as though the time passed instantly and are surprised by how much got done. With laughing gas, the effects wear off within minutes of the mask being removed and most patients can drive themselves home shortly after. If you received oral or IV sedation, you will need a driver and should plan to rest for the remainder of the day. Most feel back to normal by the next morning.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. Sedation dentistry has an excellent safety record when administered by a trained and experienced provider. Dr. Gray has been offering dental sedation since it was first introduced in the United States and has safely treated thousands of patients using this approach. Throughout every appointment, your heart rate, blood pressure, and oxygen levels are monitored continuously so that you are carefully overseen at all times.

No, not with oral conscious sedation or laughing gas. With these options, you remain awake and able to respond to questions and instructions, but you feel deeply relaxed and comfortable and most patients have very little memory of the visit. IV sedation produces a deeper level of sedation where most patients have no memory of the appointment at all, but you are not under general anesthesia.

With oral conscious sedation, the medication begins to take effect about 30 to 60 minutes after you take the pill and continues working for the duration of your appointment. Some grogginess can linger for several hours afterward, which is why you need a driver for the rest of the day. With laughing gas, the effects begin within a few minutes and wear off within minutes of removing the mask, so most patients can drive home shortly after.

Yes. Sedation dentistry is available for any procedure at our La Mesa office, not just complex or surgical work. If the idea of a routine cleaning creates significant anxiety for you, sedation can make that visit just as comfortable as any other appointment. Many of our sedation patients have avoided even basic dental care for years, and we welcome them without judgment.

The cost of sedation dentistry depends on the type of sedation used and the length of your appointment. New patients at our La Mesa office are eligible for a free sedation service valued at $390, which includes a complimentary cozy blanket for comfort. Our team is happy to walk you through costs and discuss payment options, including the Espire Care Plan for patients without insurance. Visit the contact page or request an appointment online and we will walk you through what your visit might look like.

Yes, if you are receiving oral conscious sedation or IV sedation. The medication affects your coordination and alertness for several hours after your appointment, and driving is not safe. You will need a trusted adult to bring you to the office and take you home. Our team reminds you of this when your appointment is scheduled so there are no surprises. If you choose laughing gas, most patients are able to drive themselves home once the effects have worn off.

Often, several. One of the practical advantages of sedation dentistry is that your dentist can work more efficiently because you are relaxed and comfortable throughout the entire visit. Procedures that might require multiple short appointments can sometimes be consolidated into a single longer one, which is especially helpful for patients who have delayed care for a long time and need significant work done.
